The Week Ahead: Memorial Day weekend events return FAIRFIELD Covid-19 forced the cancellation of many of the traditional Memorial Day events in 2020, but those remembrances return this year across the county. The Sacramento Valley National Cemetery is looking for volunteers to help put flags out at the gravesites Saturday and Sunday. The cemetery is located at 5810 Midway Road. Anyone interested in helping should contact the cemetery at 693-2460. Private wreath-laying events are scheduled at the cemetery near Dixon and at the Benicia Arsenal Post Cemetery. Sam Katchmar May 11, 1928 May 2, 2021 Sam was born on May 11, 1928, in Minersville, Pennsylvania. In 1936, Sam and his family, a widowed mother and five other siblings, emigrated to Poland to make a living on a small 10-acre farm owned by Sam. Sam returned to the United States in 1948 and promptly enlisted into the USAF, where he remained for 20 years. He served in four locations all in the Far East. All of 1952 he was stationed at Kangnung Base, Korea; in 1955 in Tachikawa AFB, Japan; in 1966 he was stationed in Formosa, Taiwan, and in 1968, stationed at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska, with this base still considered an overseas base.
