SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Elected officials from California’s Asian and Pacific Islander communities urged Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday to appoint an attorney general of Asian descent, saying it’s critical to have a top law enforcement official who understands and will combat anti-Asian violence.
Newsom, a Democrat, will appoint California’s next attorney general if Xavier Becerra is confirmed as expected this week as the U.S. Health and Human Services secretary.
The news conference came the day after a man was accused of killing eight people, most of them women of Asian descent, at three massage businesses in the Atlanta area. The county sheriff said it was too early to know if the attack was racially motivated.

THE BUZZ A LONG TIME GONE A year ago this week, we changed forever: Schools were ordered closed, sports games canceled, theme parks shuttered. The word “quarantine” became a part of the vocabulary of Californians’ lives. Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state emergency shortly after what was believed to be the first death of a coronavirus patient in California. The World Health Organization officially declared the spread of the Covid-19 virus a pandemic. A week later, on March 19, Newsom declared a statewide stay-at-home order.

THE BUZZ HEAT’S ON XAVIER: Xavier Becerra’s record as California’s top cop is under intense scrutiny this week, as Republicans intensify their drive to squelch his nomination to be the Biden administration’s Health and Human Services Secretary.
What’s driving the move: Republicans who had a role in successfully tabling the nomination of Neera Tanden to head the Office of Management and Budget have turned to Becerrra as the next big target. And on Wednesday, the Senate Finance Committee split evenly along party lines on whether to advance Becerra’s nomination to the full Senate floor, requiring the intervention of the Senate majority leader and underscoring the California AG’s precarious position, as POLITICO’s Alice Miranda Ollstein reported.
