Authorities did not immediately offer many details or a possible motive for the shooting, which unfolded about 6:30 a.m. Pacific Time at a light-rail yard for commuter trains of the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA).
A bomb squad was searching the yard and adjacent buildings after at least one explosive device was found, Santa Clara County Sheriff s Deputy Russell Davis said at a news conference.

Authorities have identified the gunman behind the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) facility shooting in San Jose.
57 year old Samual J. Cassidy was one of nine that lost their life in the gunfire Wednesday morning at the facility near the San Jose International Airport.
Cassidy was a former employee of VTA and Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith has said the cause of death has not been determined.
Spokesman Deputy Russell Davis noted a bomb squad was called in to search the yard after at least one explosive device was found.
The facility is a transit control centre, which stores trains and is a maintenance yard.
