Authorities say a 57-year-old maintenance worker who had been employed at the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority for at least eight years set his house on fire Wednesday morning, drove to work and shot nine co-workers to death in two buildings at a San Jose light rail yard, after possibly setting explosives. As Santa Clara County sheriff’s deputies ran on the scene just moments after the first 911 calls came in, he apparently shot himself to death.

(1) WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - In the wake of the San Jose massacre, President Joe Biden has urged the Congress to take immediate action and heed the call of the American people, including the vast majority of gun owners, to help end the epidemic of gun violence in the United States. Nine people were killed and several others were wounded when a lone gunman opened fire indiscriminately at a county rail yard in San Jose, California, Wednesday. The gunman, identified as 57-year-old Samuel Cassidy, turned his gun on himself and has reportedly died. Cassidy, who is said to be an employee at the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority, or VTA, opened fire during the early morning shift change at the light rail yard.

A mass shooting at the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) in San Jose left 9 people, including the gunman dead on Wednesday.  In a news release from the VTA, they confirmed the suspected shooter was a VTA employee. He was found dead near the Guadalupe Yard where the attack took place. The facility is a transit control center that stores trains and has a maintenance yard.
