A comparison of local January-to-November DUI arrest data for 2019 to 2020 from the California Highway Patrol shows a nearly 15% rise in 2020 DUI arrests.
For the first 11 months of 2019, CHP officers arrested 549 individuals on drunken-driving charges in the Santa Clarita Valley, according to data provided by the CHP Newhall-Area Office. During the same period in 2020, 631 individuals were booked on suspicion of DUI for the same area.
And while the 2019 statewide DUI data reflects a yearslong trending decline in DUI arrests, according to an annual DMV report, CHP officers also recorded a four-month stretch in 2020 after the stay-at-home orders were lifted that saw a 42% increase in DUI arrests over the previous year.

Boyfriend Arrested For Assault After Ramming Vehicle Of ‘Other Boyfriend’
A Van Nuys man was arrested Thursday afternoon after allegedly ramming the vehicle of his partner’s “other boyfriend,” officials said.
The incident was reported Thursday at a mobile home park on Soledad Canyon Road near Agua Dulce Canyon Road, according to Officer Josh Greengard, spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Newhall Area Office.
A woman reportedly called her boyfriend to pick her up because she “doesn’t want to be there anymore.”

Three of those 14 arrests were reported as possession of a controlled substance or narcotics.
Out of the 32 total reported arrests, 15 arrested individuals were residents outside of Santa Clarita, including residents from Palmdale, Lancaster and Yakima, Washington
Not included in that count were four transient individuals, who were charged with driving under the influence and possession of a controlled substance.
10 of the weekend arrests were felonies out of 32 total arrests. One of these arrests was a Lancaster transient, charged with driving under the influence with prior charges, whose bail was set at $725,000.

Soledad Canyon Road Shut Down As Deputies Detain Stolen Vehicle Suspect
Deputies from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station shut down Soledad Canyon Road as they detained a stolen vehicle suspect at gunpoint.
Just before 7:45 p.m. Thursday, deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station performed a felony traffic stop on Soledad Canyon near Camp Plenty Road, according to Sgt. Jepson with the station.
“While the investigation is still ongoing, we believe the vehicle to be stolen,” Jepson said. “We have one in custody and are still on scene.”
The closure of the road was not set for a known duration during the traffic stop. However, officials say that motorists should not have to wait long for the roadway to be cleared.
