SCV News | SCV School Districts Set to Reject COVID-19 Testing Funds

Many Santa Clarita Valley school districts plan to reject Centers for Disease Control (CDC) funding to provide comprehensive COVID-19-screening programs at SCV schools. The Los Angeles County Office of Education allocated $7.5 million – out of $300 million for the county’s 80 public school districts and many private schools – for SCV’s six districts last month. “We’re not going to be using those funds,” said Jeff Pelzel, superintendent of the Newhall School District, which did not conduct COVID-19 testing on its campuses. “We’ve never had a transmission from adult to adult, adult to student or student to student, resulting from a transmission on campus. That has never happened all year.”

Summary: In the first four months of 2021, the District Attorney’s Office declined to file charges on 537 Santa Clarita Valley criminal cases already 156% of the total number of declined cases for the entire previous year. If the trend holds for the rest of the year, it will represent a 369% increase in rejected cases. Of those rejected cases, 60% are the result of new policy directives by L.A. County District Attorney George Gascón, fueling concerns among some government leaders that Gascón’s plan to reform the system is threatening public safety. Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies had already arrested 25-year-old Alfredo Alvarez, of Newhall, 11 times in the previous 12 months, before he was accused of helping someone he’d just met outside of jail with another allegation. According to witnesses, Alvarez was a lookout as his alleged accomplice pulled a knife on two diners and demanded their cellphones in front of the county’s oldest restaurant, the Saugus Cafe

Planning Commission will consider Tuesday a transitional housing project on a vacant lot at 23652 Newhall Ave. Family Promise of Santa Clarita Valley proposed the four 812-square-foot, single-story two-bedroom and one-bathroom apartments for single mothers and their families. A second proposed building of 2,834 square feet on the formerly city-owned property would house four offices for Family Promise staff, one bedroom and three bathrooms for supportive, transitional housing, a communal kitchen and communal living space, according to a staff report. The proposed units are considered affordable housing, meaning a family must earn no more than 80% area median income to be a tenant.
