But the Santa Barbara Planning Commission at the last minute tanked the agreement, saying the city needed more financial benefit out of the deal. The two sides are working on new terms of an agreement. In the meantime, there is talk of a hotel replacing Nordstrom and possibly a housing development going inside the old Macy s building.
The pandemic forced hundreds of restaurants and retail businesses to lay off employees. Unemployment applications skyrocketed, and the business community is likely to be reeling from the economic shutdown for years to come.
There was some relative good news in 2020.

The Santa Barbara Airport is bringing one of the most flown airlines in the world to its hangars. Southwest Airlines will begin offering flights in and out of Santa Barbara starting some time in the new year, giving the region an economic boost.
âIt was like the Dodgers winning the World Series. I was like, âWoo!ââ exclaimed Cathy Murillo, Santa Barbaraâs mayor.

I’ve been a professional journalist for nearly 40 years, and for the most part I’ve enjoyed every minute. But nothing in all those decades compares to the fun I’ve had these last 13 years with Noozhawk.
In spite of what you may have heard, this is an exciting time to be a journalist, especially in the pioneering age of online local news.
There’s been no roadmap through the wilderness for Noozhawk to follow so we’ve been blazing our own trail since our launch in 2007. We prefer it that way, actually.

Santa Barbara received what some may consider an early Christmas present on Wednesday when Southwest Airlines announced it will begin serving the Santa Barbara Airport in 2021.
Southwest’s announcement, which included its plan to also serve Fresno Yosemite International Airport, comes as the airline industry continues to be buffeted by significant turbulence stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, which has claimed more than 300,000 lives in the United States.
