Safe Place is a national outreach and prevention program for youth ages 18 years and younger who are in crisis. It is estimated more than a million youth run away from home each year due to abuse, neglect, family conflicts, and other issues.
The Safe Place program is an option for young people who feel they have nowhere to turn.
The Abel Maldonado Community Youth Center, 600 S. McClelland St., was inducted into the National Safe Place Network on Jan. 6, 2020. The Santa Maria Fire Department is in the process of designating its five fire stations as Safe Place sites, bringing the total number of local Safe Place locations to seven by spring.

One by one, vehicles filled with COVID-19 vaccine recipients this past week rolled into a parking lot nestled between Hollister and South Patterson avenues in Goleta. Masked volunteers and staff were ready to work.
City of Santa Maria hosts drive-in bingo games

Valentine s Day is around the corner and the Santa Maria Recreation and Parks department is helping local families celebrate safely.
City staff are offering two drive-in, family-friendly Valentine s Day bingo games.
The first game took place Saturday morning at the Elwin Mussell Senior Center and was offered to people of all ages.
Children five years old and over received a bingo card and had the chance to win sweet prizes.
A family we spoke with says it s a safe and fun way to get outside of the house during the pandemic.

Restoration of a historic house slated to become a community facility in Santa Maria took another step forward Tuesday night.
The firm has been hired to complete structural renovations for the historic home built in the 1880s.
