The president of the union says they ve been in contract negotiations with the Santa Maria-Bonita School District for the last year and a half. The union is currently at an impasse with the District. Articles in their contracts relating to class size, salary, workday and work year remain far from settlement, according to union documents. The president is also calling for a fair contract to be settled now. The president says they hope to bring in a state-appointed mediator to help both parties come to a mutual agreement.

Santa Barbara County Education Office The 20th annual Battle of the Books was held online SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - This year’s annual Santa Barbara County Battle of the Books competition was held online. Over 140 students from grade levels 4th through 6th competed in the competition. The team co-champions this year are the Master of the Books and the Lightning Readers who received Battle of the Books t-shirts and books that will be included in next year s competition. Coming in third place was The Dragon Readers. Santa Barbara County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Susan Salcido said, “We would like to commend our participants for their perseverance and preparation for this exciting competition. The students demonstrated exceptional teamwork and collaboration during this literary battle.”

Interpretation services during school board meetings depend on the district and its unique community

Paso Robles community activist Yessenia Echevarria founded Paso People s Action and Mujeres de Acción (Women of Action) as a way to inform and support the Latino and Spanish-speaking residents in the city. She worked with the city to get the word out about COVID-19 safety and used social media to spread the news about a high school ethnic studies course proposed by the Paso Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee. Echevarria said she s constantly in contact with the community to identify and address their needs through local partnerships. A lot of her recent work has focused on rallying Latino and Spanish speakers to participate in school board meetings by speaking about their experiences during public comment in a language that they re comfortable with.
