United Way distributes 380,000 masks to dozens of nonprofits on the Central Coast

SANTA MARIA, Calif. - United Way is making a big delivery. There are 379,500 masks that are going to be distributed to our communities, said president and CEO Eddie Taylor of the United Way of Santa Barbara County. Taylor said it s all thanks to the organization’s partnership with Good360. It’s an international product distribution organization. We were able to leverage this purchase through them, said Taylor. That purchase was distributed at the new Toyota of Santa Maria location to charities, school districts, and more on Friday. We are very excited to be here today for the Cover California for masking and letting people know that it’s important to respect and protect our community, said Executive Director Tracy Beard of Solvang Chamber of Commerce.

Alvin Elementary School in Santa Maria placed on lockdown as law enforcement serves warrant nearby

SANTA MARIA, Calif. Alvin Elementary School in Santa Maria was placed on a brief lockdown Tuesday afternoon. At around 11:25 p.m., Santa Maria served a search warrant near the school, leading to the school being placed on lockdown. The police deployed their SWAT team at the corner at the 400 block of North Miller Street. The search was in response to a “rash of shootings” that happened in Santa Maria, police said. Santa Maria Bonita School District says the lockdown lasted from 11:25 a.m. to 12 p.m. Police the lockdown was a precautionary measure. Before the lockdown, the school was about to hand out lunch to families of students and staff. The school extended their lunch distribution by 30 minutes to accomodate to all the families who pick up there.

Migrant students receive new winter coats through school district drive

Santa Maria-Bonita School District students in the Migrant Education Program were gifted new winter coats donated by local organizations at a drive-through distribution last week. A total of 187 students received jackets at the drive-through, which took place before the beginning of winter break at the district office, district spokeswoman Maggie White said. The jackets were provided by Driscoll’s Berries, Reiter Farms and the Migrant Education Program, according to White. Santa Maria-Bonita’s Migrant Education Program provides services to over 3,600 migrant families in the district, including field trips, after-school extended education and literacy programs.
