Elementary Schools Reopening In Santa Monica-Malibu District MALIBU The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) agreed with the Santa Monica-Malibu Classroom Teachers Association (SMMCTA) collectively known as “the Parties” to implement a hybrid model for elementary schools beginning April 12, 2021.  The hybrid model entails 4 days per week of in-person/on-site attendance and one day of “synchronous/asynchronous” learning, according to a joint statement from the parties released on Tuesday, March 9. The hybrid model details 4 days per week of no less than 10 hours per week and one day per week of learning from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. with asynchronous learning after 10:30 a.m.

11:18 am PST March 5, 2021 With the launch of a teaching model called Distance Learning Plus less than two weeks away, educators at Malibu’s elementary schools are prepping campuses for the return of TK-5 students. Under a deal reached between the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District and its teachers union, DL+ as it’s known, includes distance learning three days per week and in-person activities the others. Officials say the agreement “seeks to balance having on-site/in-person academic, physical and social-emotional learning experiences, while not disadvantaging students who remain at home.” Surfside News took a tour of Malibu Elementary School to see how things will change when students return the week of March 15.

State of the City shares grief, resilience, and optimism in touching virtual event Feb. 27, 2021 at 6:00 am A far call from the usual joyous gathering, Thursday’s State of the City event was nevertheless a poignant one peppered with tales of tenacity, reflections of loss, and renewed hope for the road ahead. This year’s annual summit, hosted by the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce, brought residents together over Zoom for a moving evening with speeches from Mayor Sue Himmelrich, Chamber President Laurel Rosen, Interim City Manager Lane Dilg, and Congressman Ted Lieu. Space was held to honor and acknowledge the losses and sacrifices of community members over the past year, including the 135 residents who passed away due to Covid-19.
