Three people were killed and more than two dozen others were hospitalized Sunday after a boat capsized and broke apart in rough water just off the San Diego coast during a suspected human smuggling operation, authorities said.
Lifeguards, the US Coast Guard and other agencies responded around 10am following reports of an overturned vessel in the waves near the rugged peninsula of Point Loma, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

A packed boat being used in a suspected human smuggling operation capsized Sunday and broke apart in powerful surf along the rocky San Diego coast, killing three people and injuring more than two dozen others, authorities said.

The captain of an overcrowded boat that capsized off the San Diego coast has been taken into custody as authorities suspect the vessel was being used in a human smuggling attempt when it crashed into a reef Sunday morning, killing at least three people and hurting more than two dozen others.
U.S. Border Patrol described the unidentified captain as a “suspected smuggler,” but it has not immediately disclosed what kind of charges the person may face. The suspect was one of at least 27 people who were taken to area hospitals after the incident.
