It s time to reimagine the school campus as a community center

Schools have played a key role in providing resources and support to families beyond the needs of students since the coronavirus pandemic hit in March. But what if we took that one step further and developed schools as community centers, providing resources and supports to neighborhood families from food to wellness checks? Last May, a survey of education leaders conducted by our in-house research team found 85% of district administrators were most concerned about community health and wellness as they return to school. Asked to rank their top concerns, health and sanitation was No. 1, followed by pedagogy and facility use (7.7%) and finance and operations (7.7%).

Her introduction was “glowing” and “extremely complimentary.”

Police detain man reportedly carrying long rifle at University City middle school

SAN DIEGO    A man was detained Wednesday morning after he was seen carrying what looked like a long rifle on Standley Middle School grounds in University City during an on-campus food distribution, San Diego police said. Police recovered what turned out to be a pellet gun. The man was spotted walking across an athletic field at the school on Radcliffe Drive, south of Governor Drive, about 11 a.m., police Officer Scott Lockwood said. While the school is closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, preparations for a food distribution were underway. The campus and 76 other San Diego Unified School District schools host food distributions for children between noon and 2 p.m. on weekdays, according to the district’s website.
