A new report on air quality found that more than 4 in 10 people are breathing in unhealthy air, with the American Lung Association pointing to climate change as a driving factor. The report, which analyzes data collected by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from 2017, 2018 and 2019, also found people of color were 61% more likely to live in a county with unhealthy air than white people. This report shines a spotlight on the urgent need to curb climate change, clean up air pollution and advance environmental justice, Harold Wimmer, the association president and CEO, said in a news release accompanying the 22nd annual State of the Air report. The nation has a real opportunity to address all three at once – and to do that, we must center on healthy and health equity as we move away from combustion and fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy.

Los Angeles has topped the ozone-pollution list for 21 of the 22 years the Lung Association has produced the “State of the Air report. The San Diego-Chula Vista-Carlsbad region ranked seventh on this year s list. Los Angeles-Long Beach ranked sixth on the list of cities with the worst short-term particle pollution, and fourth for year-round particle pollution.

CALIFORNIA Recent findings from a data compilation website show that while Californians have a lower rate of obesity than residents in many other states, there are some Golden State regions more afflicted by the complex disease. In its “2021’s Most Overweight and Obese Cities in the U.S.,” WalletHub compared 100 of the most populated U.S. metro areas across 19 key indicators of weight-related problems. The 100 regions were ranked in order of obesity prevalence, with 1 being the highest rate (heaviest) and 100 being the lowest (healthiest weight).
