Seven years have gone by since China started its One Belt One Road Initiative (BRI) in 2014. In 2013 Chinese leader Xi Jinping first introduced this transnational economic belt initiative, then known as the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road.
The BRI starts in mainland China, moves along the Silk Road, via Central Asia, to Russia and Europe. On the surface, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is developing new economic cooperation with countries and regions by strengthening infrastructure along the route. The real driving force is CCP’s desire to digest its industrial overcapacity and labor in China, and drive the development of the western region to ensure the energy supply for the mainland. There are also geopolitical and security reasons for the CCP’s One Belt area.

China’s expansive connectivity vision the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is an immensely ambitious development campaign to boost trade and stimulate economic growth across Asia, Africa, Europe and beyond. It is building roads, pipelines and a port in Pakistan, bridges in Bangladesh, and railways in Russia and Malaysia to create China’s “Modern Silk Road” trading route to kick start a new era of globalization for better global connectivity.
The BRI or Belt & Road (B&R), or One Belt One Road (OBOR), as it was known earlier, is a global infrastructure development strategy of China to invest in nearly 70 countries and international organizations. This centre-piece of Chinese Communist Party (CCP) General Secretary and Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s foreign policy was unveiled by himself in September and October 2013 during visits to Kazakhstan and Indonesia. According to a leaked draft of the comprehensive strategic partnership agreement, circulated last year, Iran will receive $400 billion dollars in Chinese investments over the next 25 years in key Iranian economic sectors, including energy, telecommunications, defense, infrastructure, banking, petrochemicals, railways and ports.
