2021 Pharmacist Day highlights efforts to vaccinate community

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Pharmacists play an important role in distributing the COVID-19 vaccine. January 12th is ‘Pharmacist Day,’ and this year it’s recognizing pharmacists’ and technicians’ efforts throughout the pandemic. Wisconsin is moving into its next phase of vaccinations, and it’s much earlier than originally expected thanks to the huge response from pharmacists and technicians to administer vaccines. Mayo Clinic Health System said locally, a team of more than ten pharmacists are ready to immunize the community. Another team is being assembled to prepare vaccine syringes for the immunization clinic. One Mayo pharmacist said Tuesday it has been a difficult year, but she’s optimistic about the future.

COVID-19 variant won t make people sicker, it spreads more easy, La Crosse experts say

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Healthcare professionals in La Crosse say hospitalizations could rise due to a new COVID-19 variant. People hear the word “mutation” and Hollywood movies may come to mind. However, this reality does not include the end of the world. The new virus strain first discovered in the UK is something health experts expected. “We expect them to accumulate mutations or gain mutations along the way,” Megan Meller said, an infection preventionist with Gundersen Health System. Meller said this new B-117 strain caught the eye of health care professionals for a few reasons. “It accumulated a significant number of mutations in a very short amount of time,” she said.

The vaccines are here, but we can t let our guard down

The vaccines are here, but we can’t let our guard down The article “Pandemic backlash jeopardizes public health powers, leaders” hit close to home. I’m vice chairman of an Atlanta-area board of health, but I feel powerless.  Dave, a close friend, died of COVID-19 in November. We met in 2011. He was a SCORE Association volunteer, doing free mentoring for small businesses. He was sharp, a retired banker. I was also retired, a former healthcare executive. I began mentoring businesses with him. Dave eventually stopped volunteering, but we remained close.  When Dave came down with COVID, he called me. Dave was in good health. He said he had the virus for a week, but that it just felt like a cold. However, a few days later, Dave was brought to a hospital by ambulance and put on a ventilator. He later died.
