Peru: Rural school teacher declared president-elect

Lima, Peru: Rural teacher-turned-political novice Pedro Castillo on Monday became the winner of Peru’s presidential election after the country’s longest electoral count in 40 years. Castillo, whose supporters included Peru’s poor and rural citizens, defeated right-wing politician Keiko Fujimori by just 44,000 votes. Electoral authorities released the final official results more than a month after the runoff election took place in the South American nation. Wielding a pencil the size of a cane, symbol of his Peru Libre party, Castillo popularized the phrase “No more poor in a rich country.” The economy of Peru, the world’s second-largest copper producer, has been crushed by the coronavirus pandemic, increasing the poverty level to almost one-third of the population and eliminating the gains of a decade.

Bartlesville Mother Seeks Community Help For Child With Disabilities

By: Johnny Resendiz BARTLESVILLE, Okla. - Six months after her daughter, Elisa, was born, Cecilia Mendez said she was diagnosed with a disease that affects her brain. Doctors said Elisa would only live three to five years. Now, she is just two months away from turning 19. The family said a new handicap van would make her life a lot easier. Mendez said their old handicap van is breaking down. Car repairs now cost more than the van s worth. Although Elisa has defied the odds, Mendez said seeing her on a ventilator never gets easier.  It s very difficult, for the best and the worst at the same time, Mendez said. The best because she is my gift that I wouldn t change for anything, and the worst because I think no parent would want to see their child in this situation.

Stockton Unified scheduled to send 104 layoff staff notices by Monday

The Stockton Unified School District’s Board met for their routinely scheduled meeting. What was not part of their usual routine was the discussion to layoff 104 staff members.  Resolution 20-50 was included in the agenda for the board’s meeting on March 9. With a vote of 5-2, the resolution passed resulting in 104 people potentially losing their jobs in the district for the 2021-22 school year. Layoff notices are scheduled to be sent by March 15.   “I don’t know how we came so far away from the direction that we’d [the board] given the superintendent,” said area seven board trustee Candelaria Vargas before the meeting.
