SHC directs police to initiate crackdown against mafia involved in child beggary Karachi January 31, 2021 The Sindh High Court (SHC) has directed police to initiate a crackdown against the mafia involved in beggary of children. The direction came on a petition seeking the implementation of the Sindh Child Protection Authority law in the province to protect the child rights. Petitioner Natasha Lakhani had submitted that thousands of street children were roaming in the city and several were being used in criminal activities, begging and other anti-social activities. The high court had on a previous hearing directed a provincial law officer to call a report from the police department that included details of action taken against the mafia involved in the beggary of children as the social welfare department had submitted that various cases had been lodged against such culprits.

APP/File KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly on Thursday passed a bill enhancing privileges and allowances of the provincial parliamentary secretaries, including ‘special allowance’ of Rs 50,000, use of a car, house rent and sumptuary allowance. Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Mukesh Kumar Chawla, who presented The Sindh Parliamentary Secretaries (Salaries, Allowances and Privileges) (Amendment) Bill, 2021, said that the privileges and perks of the parliamentary secretaries were increased as their remuneration were nominal as compared to their counterparts of other provinces. He informed the house that a common lawmaker of Sindh Assembly got a sum of around Rs155,000 monthly but a parliamentary secretary receives an additional ‘nominal’ amount of approximately Rs25,000.

Five lawmakers of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) are working as parliamentary secretaries for the provincial government’s departments of local government, food, law, irrigation and Zakat & Ushr. After the passage of the Sindh Parliamentary Secretaries (Salaries, Allowances and Privileges) (Amendment) Bill 2021, each of the five lawmakers will receive a special allowance of Rs50,000 and a sumptuary allowance of Rs10,000 every month.

PHOTO: NNI Instead of announcing relief to the masses amid rising inflation and a raging pandemic, the provincial assembly passed a bill on Thursday to increase the remuneration of parliamentary secretaries in Sindh. Pakistan Peoples Party lawmaker Mukesh Kumar Chawla justified the move saying that the raise is in line with the earnings of their counterparts in other provinces. Parliamentary secretaries, who happen to be members of the provincial assembly as well, establish and maintain a liaison between the members and the minister heading a particular department. In the absence of a minister, the relevant parliamentary secretary acts on their behalf in matters pertaining to resolutions, bills, questions and answers and items on the agenda. There are currently five parliamentary secretaries in Sindh.
