Ilorin, Jan 9, 2021 The Selection Committee of the Federal Government’s Special Public Works (SPW) Programme has stated that the programme would inject N1 billion into the rural economy in Kwara over the next three month.
Mr Olusegun Oyewo, the Chairman of the committee in Kwara, disclosed this at the official launch of the programme in Kwara, on Saturday, in Ilorin.
Oyewo, who spoke through Mr Ahmed Yusuf, vice chairman of the committee, said that the trickle-down effect of this injection was expected to be positive for the local economy.
“It is our prayer that social intervention programmes like this are created and implemented more often by the Federal Government.

The delay by the Nigerian government to implement its Special Public Works (SPW) scheme has heightened anxiety among unemployed youth who have been recruited into the scheme.
The government said it would create 774,000 casual jobs under the scheme to mitigate unemployment in the country.
SPW is a dry season/off-season transient job programme originally designed for the rehabilitation/maintenance of public and social infrastructure.
Participants would be recruited largely from the pool of unskilled persons in Nigeria’s rural areas and paid an allowance of N20,000 monthly.

The House of Representatives (Reps), on Tuesday, halted the implementation of the employment of 774,000 special public workers as well as payment of N52 billion allocated for the scheme pending the conclusion of various controversies trailing the initiative.
The resolution was passed after the adoption of a motion on the ‘Urgent need to stop the circumvention of due process by Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment in allocating the 774,000 slots in the special public works programme,’ sponsored by Hon Olajide Olatubosun.
During the review of the public outcry trailing the recent sack of the Director-General of National Directorate of Employment (NDE), Nasiru Argungu, the lawmakers who condemned President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision, called for his immediate reinstatement.
