Hyndburn: Tories make big gains as Red borough crumbles

Labour and Tory leaders Cllrs Miles Parkinson and Marlene Haworth at the Hyndburn count THE Conservatives made major gains in Hyndburn in Thursday’s elections to build on their general election triumph in December 2019. They won five wards and lost one with former party boss Peter Britcliffe taking over the seat of his daughter Sara in St Andrew’s ward Oswaldtwistle which she has vacated as she is now the MP. They took a second seat in the ward with a victory for Steven Smithson. They also gained councillors in neighbouring St Oswald’s ward, Altham, Rishton, and Church. But they lost the Barnfield ward in Accrington left vacant by the death of their former group leader Tony Dobson to Labour.

Janet Finch-Saunders was re-elected to her Aberconwy seat on Friday as votes were counted in the Welsh Parliament election. Giving her acceptance speech, Ms Finch-Saunders said she had been horrified by attacks on social media. Ms Finch-Saunders said her family had been left offended. The Member of the Senedd for the area since 2011, who has also sat on Conwy County Council, said: I have been horrified by this particular campaign.

The Bromsgrove District Council leader says she is humbled but relieved to be re-elected. She said: “We as a party never take anything for granted and its clear the public have been very well informed. “We have worked together and with the electorate to get these results. We just want to say a massive thank you!” She told The Advertiser her focus for the division will be to implement faster broadband and great connectivity. The Bromsgrove Conservatives have gained two seats from labour-controlled Beacon division and Alvechurch previously led by Independent Charlie Hothman. But have lost their Bromsgrove Central seat to Lib Dem councillor Joshua Robinson.
