Polis should defy left more often

I always hesitate to compliment Jared Polis for fear that any kind word from me backfires. It could anger his progressive supporters who have near complete sway over him. When Jared was running for Congress the first time, I was joking around with him saying that if he would just donate a million dollars to my organization, Independence Institute, I wouldn’t endorse him. Polis instantly shot back, “How much for you to endorse my opponent?” He understands the danger of praise. But praise is deserved. Polis FINALLY stood up to the loony wing of his party (which, by the way, has complete control of the state legislature). He sent a strong veto message against the economy-wrecking, Green New Deal-wannabe Senate Bill 200, sponsored by socialists Faith Winter, Dominick Moreno and Dominique Jackson.

COLUMN System is stacked against us ratepayers

COLUMN: Nothing special about winner-take-all voting

This column is about fixing our broken country. So much ink is being spilled nowadays on who gets to vote. Voting rights are important, but what’s more important is how we vote. In a word, it’s terrible. Our voting system is terrible because it’s winner-take-all (also called “first past the post”), and because legislative elections have only one winner. Virtually no other modern democracy does it that way. Most democracies have multiple parties and districts with multiple winners, with the seats allocated in proportion to how many votes the candidates and/or parties received. Most countries don’t do simple winner-take-all, because 1) if there are more than two candidates, someone can win with less than half the votes, and 2) it over-represents the winning party in a legislative election while under-representing the loser. Ever heard of gerrymandering?

Constitutional Scholar Rob Natelson on Monday s Talk Back

Constitutional Scholar Rob Natelson on Monday’s Talk Back Rob Natelson, the Constitutional Fellow at the Independence Institute in Denver appeared on the KGVO Talk Back program to answer questions from listeners, as he does every month. One caller asked about why the Supreme Court refused to hear the lawsuit out of Texas that Montana had joined over the November 2020 election. Natelson said the main issue in that case was bad timing by the state of Texas. “Texas brought its case too late,” said Natelson. “It s a good example of how those people who were concerned about election integrity kind of botched the whole judicial strategy, that is the Trump team botched the whole judicial strategy. I think that s it. I think that s a shame, because I think there were really serious irregularities on the 2020 election, however much the media and others don t want us to talk about them.”
