Mali Finch: 100% Clean Act is the next step

Imagine living in a world where windmills and solar panels are the norm, and fossil fuels are completely phased out. This is the world I envision.
We need urgent action on climate change and no more business-as-usual. We are already seeing the impacts throughout the world sea levels are rising, storms are increasing, and wildfires are becoming rampant. Transitioning to 100% renewable energy is the necessary next step to move us in the right direction. If this action is not taken there will be detrimental outcomes for the whole planet.
As Alejandra Borunda said, “Hitting the Paris Agreement targets will still result in rising seas. Missing them would make things worse.” (Borunda, 2019). The issue is in Massachusetts we’ve been too slow to act. However, there is momentum with the passage of S9, a climate bill that aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Emily Jorgensen: Need for a cleaner future
Published: 4/18/2021 4:00:05 PM A major environmental challenge faced by our world today is climate change and it is increasingly affecting the world around us. One reason climate change is such a prominent issue in today’s world is because of the overuse of fossil fuels. Around 80% of our energy comes from the use of fossil fuels through gas, coal, and oil.
I think the first step to correcting this issue would be passing the 100% clean renewable energy act. Some of the main problems of the detrimental effects of fossil fuels include land degradation, water pollution, air pollutants, global warming, and more. Coal-fired power plants alone contribute to about 42% of harmful mercury emissions and two thirds of the United State’s sulfur dioxide emissions (which can cause acid rain). These emissions not only have negative impacts on the environment but they can also cause respiratory illnesses from the production of smog.

Climate change is arguably the greatest threat to our survival. Top scientists are in agreement that we only have until the end of the decade to act to prevent the worst impacts of climate change from becoming reality.
Aside from Massachusetts already seeing the impacts, with coastal erosion causing the rapid disappearance of North Shore beaches, Connecticut, from where I come from, experienced the impacts of Tropical Storm Isaias last summer, and I saw firsthand what it did to my community: downing trees and leaving people in my hometown without power for up to a week.

Letter to the Editor: Climate change a threat to our survival

Climate change is arguably the greatest threat to our survival. Top scientists are in agreement that we only have until the end of the decade to act to prevent the worst impacts of climate change from becoming reality. Aside from Massachusetts already seeing the impacts, with coastal erosion causing the rapid disappearance of North Shore beaches, I come from Connecticut, which experienced the impacts of Tropical Storm Isaias last summer, and I saw firsthand what it did to my community: downing trees and leaving people in my hometown without power for up to a week. In addition, it caused similar damage to Massachusetts residents. Knowing what we do about the impacts of climate change, the Massachusetts state legislature must pass the 100% Clean Act, which would transition the state to 100% clean electricity by 2035, and to 100% clean heating and transportation by 2045. Transitioning off fossil fuels is the only
