A fourth person survived the attack.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate could not find fault with the police s actions when they used a water cannon to disperse frustrated Sassa grant recipients in Bellville on 15 January.
IPID found that the police used minimum force to get the grant recipients to practise social distancing in an effort to curb the spread of Covid-19. They were within their operational rights to enforce Covid-19 regulations.
According to the IPID report, the manager of the Bellville Sassa office said officials called the police for help earlier that day after they battled for days to get the grant recipients to comply with the regulations.
Family suspects foul play after brother dies in police custody

Cape Town - While Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) ruled that no foul play was found in the mysterious death of a Gansbaai man, the family said they do not believe the findings.
Alwyn Andre Otto was said to have hanged himself in prison, but his family suspect foul play by police.
Otto was arrested on February 7, he was arrested for contempt of court for a drunk-driving case that happened in the Eastern Cape and was also accused of abalone poaching.
On February 8, he appeared at the Hermanus Court. On the day of his death on February 10, his sister Natasha de Wet said he called their father to ask for a lawyer.

JOHANNESBURG - Fearing for her life, a Centurion woman turned to the police for help.
Instead of getting support, she claims she spent several hours behind bars on trumped-up charges.
Anja Pentz wants to give her side of the story in hopes that other women don t suffer the same fate.
The police declined to comment, saying the matter has been referred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate for further investigation.
