SEISS, or the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme, has been criticised several times in recent months as it became clear many would be excluded from Rishi Sunak s support. The Government has made attempts to address it with limited success.

He said: For those of us who know the arts are notoriously fickle and have done the responsible thing and saved up money to smooth out any bumps in work over the years are now in the position of being penalised.
A Treasury spokesperson said: “Our Self Employment Income Support Scheme is one of the most generous in the world and has helped more than 2.7 million people so far claiming over £13.7 billion.
“Funding is designed to target those who need it most and protect the taxpayer against fraud and abuse. Those not eligible may still be able to access our loans schemes, tax deferrals, mortgage holidays and business support grants.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme last year, as part of the Government’s support package for businesses and workers during the coronavirus pandemic. The scheme has since paid out billions of pounds worth of taxable grants to many self-employed individuals, although a number of self-employed people have been excluded from the scheme s eligibility criteria.
