Global groundwater wells at risk of running dry
“Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water.” It’s a silly rhyme, but one that highlights a simple fact: Humans have long relied on wells – such as the one on the hill visited by Jack and Jill – for their primary drinking water supply.
Although the number of people who draw their water by pail is declining as pumps become ever more widespread, groundwater wells still supply drinking water to more than half of the world’s population and sustain over 40% of irrigated agriculture. But this vital resource underfoot often gets overlooked.

Ohio University’s Office of Sustainability is pleased to celebrate Earth Day with recognition of the 2021 Sustainability Award winners. The annual Sustainability Awards are given to individuals and organizations nominated by their peers for contributions during the previous academic year.
The Faculty Sustainability Award is given to an OHIO faculty member who has made exemplary contributions to their field through sustainability-related teaching, research, scholarship or service.

This year’s award is given to Assistant Professor of Geography Amy Lynch. Dr. Lynch is an urban planner with a conservation and environmental management background whose research is focused on green infrastructure and sustainability community monitoring. LAWRENCE Four students at the University of Kansas are nominees for Udall Undergraduate Scholarships, which recognize students who demonstrate leadership, public service and commitment in the fields of tribal public policy, native health care or the environment.
KU’s nominees:
Anna Krause, a junior in ecology, evolution & organismal biology and English
Lydia Yuengling, a junior majoring in architecture
Kaci Zarek, a junior majoring in ecology & evolutionary biology
The Udall Undergraduate Scholarship is a federal scholarship that honors the legacies of Morris Udall and Stewart Udall, two former Arizona lawmakers whose careers had an effect on American Indian self-governance, health care and the stewardship of public lands and natural resources.
