I recently purchased the Ninja Foodi Smart Grill to use as an indoor grill. One of its other functions is an air-crisp feature (same as an air fryer), but I already had an air fryer that I liked, so I’d dismissed this feature on the new grill.
However, I gave it a second look after spotting a recipe for spicy buttermilk ranch chicken in the cooking instruction booklet that came with the grill. It sounded much like “hot chicken,” a type of fried chicken unique to Nashville, Tenn., that’s spiced with cayenne pepper and quite wonderful.
So I gave the recipe a try and found that Ninja’s air-crisp feature works really well.
Just over a year ago, Gerry Kim and Josh Gertzen, the owners of the duo of Frozen Matter ice cream shops in Uptown and Washington Park, purchased Sweet Action, an established Denver brand with its own loyal following at 52 Broadway. While the pandemic postponed Kim and Gertzen s plans for merging the two brands, they ve recently been putting those plans in motion. We spent six months just thinking about what we wanted the future to look like, Gertzen says.
But after giving it much thought, the couple made a decision as difficult as it was bold: They re phasing out the name Frozen Matter in favor of Sweet Action. At first, the primary focus was just getting all the stores through the pandemic, Kim adds. March is when we usually get a big upswing coming out of winter, but not last year. Most of our ice cream was being sold in groceries.
The new Lady Boss Festival celebrates women in the food, beverage and hospitality industries those who take charge and rise up within their professions. The Colorado chapter of Les Dames d’Escoffier International created the event in order to honor twelve female professionals in the state who are leaders in restaurants, agriculture, food retail and other fields. And while the inaugural event was virtual this year for approximately 45 members and sponsors, Les Dames already has the date planned for next year’s in-person event.
“We want to do something fun but also educational,” says Lori Tieszen, chair of the Lady Boss committee. The 2022 in-person festival will be a time to teach and honor women making an impact within the culinary world. And it will also be a moment to raise funds for scholarships aimed at supporting young women in pursuing education in culinary-related fields.
