Danny Blas, who teaches middle school history and social science at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, is excited to see his students again. Some students have had their Zoom cameras turned off this school year, so Monday will be the first time he sees their faces.
But Blas also is scared. He is vaccinated so he’s not scared about his own health, but his “worst nightmare” is if one of his students contracts COVID, he said.
“I wish there was a support group I could go to and just be able to have someone telling us, or someone telling me, everything’s going to be okay,” he said. “It’s just a very complex collection of thoughts and feelings and stresses.”

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) The Chula Vista Elementary School District is warning parents after Verizon recalled millions of mobile Wi-Fi hotspots due to a risk of overheating.
The district says Verizon issued the recall after the US Consumer Product Safety Commission cited situations where the battery inside the device can overheat âposing a fire and burn hazard.â
âThe safety of our students, families, and staff members is our top priority. Our District is working diligently, in concert with SDCOE and Verizon, to exchange all recalled Ellipsis Jetpack devices as quickly and efficiently as possible,â the district says.

Last fall, Luna, Bruno, Cesar and Kate enrolled in college immediately out of high school. As Latinx youth who speak English as a second language, college was never a certainty for them. Their start was even more impressive in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, when enrollment from low income and majority non-White high school students declined significantly more than enrollment at high-income or low-minority-enrollment schools.
Along with having engaged families, they shared the key experience of learning music. After handing them their first instruments 10 years ago, I have witnessed music’s role in helping them succeed.
