‘Let’s solve the PPP issue’: Mills explores ways to avoid taxing PPP loans

AUGUSTA, Maine After her budget plan received backlash in the Maine Legislature earlier this week, Gov. Janet Mills is asking her departments to find funds that would help both balance the budget and allow the state to avoid having to tax federal business loans.
Mills is now looking for a solution, directing her departments to see whether federal funding may exist to help Maine provide the same beneficial tax treatment to Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) funds that the federal government has.

AUGUSTA, Maine There is controversy at the Maine State House over the legislature s face mask policy.
Republican Rep. Laurel Libby and others have been wearing so-called half face shields. It does not cover your nose and often times the way they are wearing it, it doesn t cover your mouth, Democratic Senate President Troy Jackson said. I think we need to be better at communicating, Senate Republican Leader Jeff Timberlake said.
The legislature s COVID-19 policy requires that masks cover both the face and nose unless the individual has a medical condition preventing the use of face coverings. In such a case, the policy states the lawmaker may participate in meetings remotely.
Maine Republican House member leaves party in dispute over committee assignments
Rep. John Andrews of Paris and Sen. Rick Bennett of Oxford both expressed displeasure with their party s legislative leadership after having committee requests denied.

The 130th Maine Legislature has yet to start its work in earnest, but some Republican members of the House and Senate already are expressing dissatisfaction over their committee assignments.

In a broadside on Facebook, Rep. John Andrews of Paris took aim at House Minority Leader Kathleen Dillingham of Oxford for not giving him the committee assignment he wanted. He said he is leaving the Republican Party for the Libertarian Party and encouraged other dissatisfied Republicans to do the same.
