SD&G – Santa Claus may need rubber boots coming to Eastern Ontario. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in SD&G will be a wet one as Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning this morning (Dec. 24) calling for up to 50 millimeters (1.97 inches) of rain starting tonight and continuing through Friday. “The frozen ground will have a reduced ability to absorb this rainfall,” leading to localized flooding, the weather agency said. The South Nation Conservation Authority issued a water safety statement, warning people to be careful near lakes and streams. Driver charged in deadly summer Highway 401 crash near Morrisburg

(Newswatch Group/Bill Kingston, File) MORRISBURG – Provincial police have charged the driver of a vehicle that collided with a transport truck on Highway 401 this summer, killing their passenger from Cornwall. Police announced Monday that 20-year-old Taisha Martell of Cornwall is facing charges of criminal negligence causing death and impaired driving causing death. She is also charged with driving with open alcohol in the vehicle under the Liquor Licence Act and a Highway Traffic Act charge of being a novice driver without a blood-alcohol reading of zero. Martell will make a court appearance by video in Cornwall on Monday, Dec. 28. Richard Hesse-Andre, 22, of Cornwall died June 18, 2020 when a car he was a passenger in collided with a truck in the westbound lanes of Highway 401 between Dickinson Drive and Upper Canada Road, east of Morrisburg.

Speaking with the township’s environment committee Friday morning (Dec. 11), Ewen MacDonald says his recommendations will come after results of the garbage composition study are known, which the committee hopes to have by late January. In November, South Glengarry council asked MacDonald to prepare a report but there had been no timeline for the completion of that report. “From my position as infrastructure manager and knowing that we are filling up our landfill sites quicker than we anticipated, I really don’t think administratively we can make any recommendation to council other than they consider reducing the bag limits whether that be over a period of time or take the leap and go right to two bags. All other advisories have also ended. SD&G – Some areas of SD&G are under weather advisories while northeastern portions are under a freezing rain warning today (Saturday). Environment Canada issued the bulletins just before 11 a.m. and says a “messy mix” of snow, ice pellets and a period of freezing rain will come this afternoon and tonight for Maxville and Alexandria. There is the possibility of up to 4 centimeters (1.6 inches) of snow and ice pellets and up to 2 millimeters (0.07 inches) of ice from several hours of freezing rain.
