Thailand enlists dogs to sniff out Covid-19 asymptomatic persons

BANGKOK (March 17): Trained by Chulalongkorn University s Faculty of Veterinary Science, six Labrador Retrievers are set to sniff out Covid-19 asymptomatic persons at designated airports and ports in Thailand, with an about 95% accuracy rate. Dr Kaywalee, who is the project’s chief, said dogs’ sense of smell is 50 times greater than that of humans, and through the sweat produced by humans, they could sniff out those carrying the virus but showing no symptoms.

This ground-breaking initiative aims to preserve and restore marine resources in Thailand. The project is also expected to generate socio-economic benefits and contribute to ecosystem rehabilitation as well as generate new knowledge on the use of artificial reefs to conserve Thai seas for the future.
