Bosnia and Herzegovina Operational Update – March 2021
Format
1,269 migrants and asylum-seekers arrived irregularly in BiH in March, representing a 64% increase over the previous month and the highest number since October 2020. Of these arrivals, 24 were reported to be unaccompanied children (UASC). The total number of arrivals in 2021 is 2,712, while 72,125 arrivals have been recorded since the start of the mixed movement in January 2018.
1,172 persons (92%) arriving in March expressed an intention to seek asylum with the Service for Foreigners’ Affairs (SFA).
8 Refugee Status Determination (RSD) interviews were conducted in March, all of them in UNHCR’s Information Center.
1 decisionˣ was issued in March, which was a negative first-instance decision. 5 asylum claims were suspended during the period.

Acting on the order and under the supervision of a Prosecutor from the Special Department for Organized Crime, Economic Crime and Corruption of the Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina, SIPA police officers carried out an operation codenamed ‘Fast’ and deprived five suspects of liberty and conducted searches of facilities at several locations, with the assistance of the Sarajevo Canton Ministry of the Interior, Republika Srpska Ministry of the Interior, Service for Foreigners’ Affairs and Intelligence and Security Agency (OSA) of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Situation Overview
During the reporting week, IOM and representatives of Ministry of Security and the Service for Foreigners’ Affairs (SFA) met at the new Temporary Reception Centre (TRC) Lipa to discuss future developments in the new reception centre. IOM presented the construction plans for the reconstruction at Lipa, in line with minimum humanitarian SPHERE standards. Participants were informed on the execution schedule, the tenders, and the budget necessary to complete the work. Furthermore, discussion articulated on the ways in which the Ministry of Security could help and on the timing for the transfer of migrants and asylum seekers from Provisional Camp (PC) Lipa to the new TRC Lipa.
