Somerset is fast becoming a favourite haunt for celebrities, and it is no wonder.
Actor Hugh Grant was spotted in Frome during lockdown, enjoying shopping and al fresco dining.
The Beckhams are frequent visitors as are lots of other well known personalities.
It was supposed to be Botham v Roebuck, but it turned into the Graeme Hick Show. But the visitor s batsman Graeme Hick stole the plaudits by plundering the Somerset bowling to all corners of the County Ground as he scored a massive 405 runs in a single innings. Botham and Roebuck had fallen out after Somerset had released West Indies stars Viv Richards and Joel Garner two season earlier. Botham left the club in protest and headed off to Worcestershire.

DISTRESSED condition was no barrier to sale for a collection of Beswick horses at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s Spring Sporting Sale. Buyers were undeterred by the sorry state of some of the pottery pieces, but their rarity only drove up prices at The Octagon Salerooms, East Reach, Taunton. A collection of Beswick horses, including a Windsor Grey, together sold for £4,600. The most notable individual lot was £2,200 achieved for a grey horse and a chestnut. The painting section saw a range of pleasing prices. A well traveled Lionel Edwards oil painting bought by a Northamptonshire client from Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s salerooms in 2001 returned to the saleroom and found a new home in West Somerset.

CONGRATULATIONS to Kieron Pollard and Jason Holder for being recognised by the Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack (WCA) for their achievements on the cricket field for 2020.
This publication of Wisden’s started in 1863 and is published annually. When it celebrated 100 years of publication in 1963, the West Indies (WI) were touring England. In honour of this, Wisden’s publishers donated a trophy to be presented to the winner of the West Indies and England Test series, for them to hold until the next encounter.
For next year’s Test clash between the two countries in the WI, there will no longer be a Wisden trophy. It has been replaced by the Sir Vivian Richards/Lord Botham trophy in honour of the two great friends who met when Richards joined the playing staff of the Somerset County Cricket Club in 1974.
