Punjab to introduce interfaith harmony policy

National February 5, 2021 LAHORE: Punjab Minister for Human Rights and Minorities Affairs Ijaz Alam Augustine has said the provincial government is set to introduce an interfaith harmony policy, which is aimed to promote peaceful coexistence between diverse citizenry of Punjab. He was speaking at multi-stakeholder dialogue: “Towards Improved Human Rights Protection in Punjab”, jointly organised by the Democracy Reporting International and Punjab Human Rights and Minority Affairs Department. The minister said: “We need to change societal behaviour to ensure respect for people’s rights, especially of minority communities.” While speaking on the occasion, Tahir Khalil Sindhu, chairperson of the Punjab Assembly’s Standing Committee on Human Rights and Minorities Affairs, extended support to human rights stakeholders. Dear Mr. Zuckerberg and Mr. Pichai, In the past few years, you have pioneered important transparency tools to help your platform users understand, learn about and contextualise the political advertising they see. We agree that advertiser verification processes and ad repositories are key safeguards against online manipulation and misinformation. However, we are saddened to observe that these benefits have not been equally distributed among your global user base. Each platform operates fluctuating and often widely differing transparency standards for different countries. While some users benefit from seeing political advertising in an ad repository, others do not. Where some users are offered detailed information about a political ad, others are not. There are no legitimate or otherwise publicly disclosed reasons justifying this difference in treatment.

Govt, civil society partnership important for development Islamabad January 18, 2021 Islamabad : Syeda Adeela Bokhari from Economic Affairs Division has said that the ministry has devised a new draft policy to ensure the accountability and financial transparency of the INGOs/NGOs which will be implemented after the formal approval from the federal cabinet. Ms Adeela was addressing a webinar on ‘The State of Civil Society in Pakistan’ jointly organised by Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) and Pakistan Centre for Philanthropy (PCP) here Saturday. Ms Adeela said that her division regulates only those INGOs which receive a financial contribution from the foreign countries and donors. She said that the new policy is expected to respond to various issues and concerns of the sector. Besides, a web-portal is being created to facilitate online applications for the registration of INGOs/NGOs with the EAD.

MNAs call for enhancing Parliamentary oversight of govt’s COVID-19 response January 14, 2021 ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Key members of the Parliamentary Task Force on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) called for enhancing parliamentary oversight of the government’s response to COVID-19 in various sectors and asked the government to convene a session of the National Assembly which has not met during the last two months. These views were expressed by Members of the Taskforce on SDGs at a Consultative Session on Improving Parliamentary Oversight of government’s COVID-19 response with the MNA and Convenor of the Taskforce on SDGs Riaz Fatyana, organized by the SDGs Secretariat in collaboration with the Democracy Reporting International (DRI) in Islamabad on Thursday.
