You can’t always get what you want: special legislative session ends in stalemate Close Close Today the state assembly convened in a session outside their normal floor schedule to attempt to stop federal unemployment aid.  The GOP-led chamber met in what’s called an “extraordinary session” to put a stop to enhanced unemployment checks that were beefed up during the pandemic.  It was an attempt to override a veto from Governor Evers. Earlier this month, Evers shot down the legislature’s attempt to end enhanced federal unemployment aid in Wisconsin. Under that program, set to expire in about six weeks, Wisconsinites receiving unemployment receive an additional $300 in federal aid, on top of the state’s typical unemployment benefits.

GOP eyes overriding veto on bill to end $300 a week in additional unemployment benefits By: Associated Press July 26, 2021 3:42 pm By SCOTT BAUER Associated Press MADISON, Wis. (AP) Gov. Tony Evers called the Republican-controlled Legislature into a special session on Monday to increase spending on public schools and higher education on the same day the Assembly planned to vote to override the governor’s previous veto of a bill ending $300 weekly supplemental unemployment payments. The override attempt on Tuesday was almost certain to fail because there aren’t enough Republican votes to pass it without persuading some Democrats to cross sides. Likewise, Evers’ special session call was also likely to be ignored, which Republicans have done repeatedly when he’s made similar attempts to pass his priorities.
