JANM Stages Virtual Gala

East L.A. Taiko kicked off the virtual gala on May 1 for the Japanese American National Museum in energetic style, performing on the steps of the museum, which only recently reopened its doors to the public.
JANM weathered the storm of a global pandemic with what CEO Ann Burroughs called “a year of extraordinary bounty which has given us a strong focus on the future.”

Allegiance (musical) is about a story set during Japanese American Internment of WWII, inspired by the experiences of George Takei during Japanese Internment and the history of Japanese Americans serving in WWII. During the Allegiance musical screening event, we will screen the whole musical, followed by a panel discussion with the cast members, which aims to highlight the importance of diversity and inclusion.
Two panels will be conducted on May 28 (Panel 1) and May 31 (Panel 2) respectively. In Panel 1, we will have

The
cartoon is endlessly malleable, able to serve as a staple of children’s programming even as it questions gender norms (e.g. Bugs Bunny) or functions as a proponent of U.S. foreign policy (may I introduce you to U.S. soft power ambassador Donald Duck?).

Help build a farmstand and art gallery at North Long Beach Victory Garden on May 8
On Saturday, May 8, from 9 a.m. until noon, Long Beach Fresh invites community members to help build a farmstand to distribute produce to the community. Part of the adjoining historic fire station will also be transformed into a community art gallery for exhibitions and shows. Artist Amy Tanaha will lead the building process.
The garden is at 6509 Gundry Ave., at 65th Street.
Junior League of Long Beach releases cookbook for 90th anniversary
Presales are now open for the Junior League of Long Beach’s limited edition cookbook, “JLLB Cook Book Celebrating 90 Years of Life, Community & Cooking.” It will include stories along with over 100 tested recipes from the Junior League’s 400 women volunteers.
