Author: Hollie Schlesselman Updated: 10:56 PM CST February 9, 2021 JOHNSTON, Iowa Johnston police are encouraging parents to teach their children about personal safety after a school resource officer confiscated a look-alike firearm from a student at Summit Middle School Tuesday afternoon.  The firearm turned out to be a BB gun that closely resembles a Glock 19 semi-automatic handgun. Staff members at the school informed the school resource officer of a report of a student with a weapon on school property around 2:45 p.m., according to the Johnston Police Department.

Des Moines, Johnston school districts approved for remote learning through winter break Sarah Kay LeBlanc, Des Moines Register Waiver requests for remote instruction are on the rise in Iowa Replay Video UP NEXT Des Moines Public Schools students will be online at least through winter break after the Iowa Department of Education approved the district s online learning waiver Friday. The district s school board voted to apply for the waiver Tuesday. Board members also voted 4-2 to allow Superintendent Thomas Ahart to apply for enough remote learning waivers from the state to keep some students online for the rest of the semester if community metrics surpass the board s threshold for filing a waiver. Board members Teree Caldwell-Johnson and Kelli Soyer voted against the motion.
