Ridgecrest Daily Independent Kern County is halting the use of Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines after reports that six women between the ages of 18 and 48 developed unusual types of blood clots 6 to 13 days after receiving the vaccine, according to an April 13 news release from the county department of public health. The pause comes on the recommendation of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and will last until the FDA and CDC complete their review. The pause comes as the result of the vaccine safety review process, according to the release. Vaccine reactions are reported into the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System or VAERS.  CDC experts review the reports in VAERS, looking for commonalities in reported health conditions to determine if they could potentially be related to the vaccine, according to the release.
