Scams can take place all year round, but they can happen more during tax season, according to Ridgecrest Police Department Sergeant Aaron Tucker.
Tucker checked in with the DI recently with advice for avoiding getting scammed.
“One thing is always for sure, the IRS will never call you asking you to identify yourself. they predominantly correspond through mail,” he said.
Scammers use snail mail, the telephone or email to rip people off, according to the IRS website at https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/tax-scams-consumer-alerts.
According to the website, the IRS never initiates contact with taxpayers by email, text messages or social media channels to request personal or financial information.
Abdul Odeh was sworn in by Judge Kenneth Pritchard April 1 in Ridgecrest.
Odeh plans on practicing law at IWV Legal along with attorney John-Paul Serrao. Odeh told the DI via email he plans to primarily focus on personal injury and criminal law.
Odeh’s family has long-term roots in Ridgecrest. The family moved here in 1987 when Odeh’s father, Khaled Odeh, bought the local Neighborhood Market.
Odeh graduated from Burroughs High School in 2000 and from the University of California, Riverside in 2008 with a bachelor s degree in business economics.
He started Sage Mart, home of the famous Beer Cave, in 2010 and bought The Smoke Cave in 2012, he told the DI via email.
