Bans on GMO corn, glyphosate in Mexico would shrink food supplies, industry says

4 Min Read MEXICO CITY, Jan 15 (Reuters) - The Mexican government’s push to wean itself off a massive dependence on genetically modified corn imports would upend the country’s food supply, including its big livestock sector, industry officials warn. A Dec. 31 degree banning the use of genetically modified corn over three years has sparked a frenzy of lobbying urging officials to reconsider. Both the agriculture and economy ministries held high-level meeting with industry representatives this week, according to several participants. Alpha-gal is a sugar molecule found in most mammals, including pigs. These sugars can trigger mild to a severe allergic reaction called the AGS (Alpha-Gal Syndrome).

UPDATE 2-China to approve further domestic GMO corn, soy crop varieties

(Adds Syngenta comment in last paragraph) BEIJING, Jan 11 (Reuters) - China said on Monday it was set to approve the safety of another genetically modified (GMO) corn variety and a GMO soybean, both produced by Beijing Dabeinong Technology Group Co Ltd. The move comes after China last year approved three domestically designed GMO crops as safe, the first in a decade, in a fresh push towards commercial planting of GMO crops in the world’s top soybean importer and a major corn buyer. Beijing has never permitted planting of GMO soybean or corn varieties but it permits their import for use in animal feed.
