Lakewood restaurant and church host vaccine promotion party event Sunday

View Comments LAKEWOOD - All Saints Episcopal Church and La Casa De La Tia Restaurant will host one of 14 statewide “Grateful for the Shot” vaccination events this weekend aimed at promoting the safety of the vaccines and urging more residents to receive them. The restaurant at 202 Main St. will offer the free shots between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Sunday, Gov. Phil Murphy’s office announced. All Saints Church, located several blocks away, is promoting the event as one of several around the state using houses of worship to urge people to get vaccinated, Murphy s office said. “Each event will have a ‘block party’ feel in a trusted and community atmosphere with a mix of food, music, and prizes in order to break down barriers to accessing the vaccine for individuals and families,” state officials said.

Undocumented immigrants can get NJ driver s licenses starting May 1

Benito Torres knows too well the difficulties of everyday life in New Jersey without a driver s license. An undocumented Mexican immigrant living in Millville, Torres has gotten several summonses over the years for driving without a license. He needs to drive to get to the furniture warehouse where he works. And there are other hang-ups as well: A side job as an auto mechanic is harder because he has struggled to exchange tools at hardware stores without a license. Even buying a beer after a hard day s work is more complicated without a standard ID.  “I’ve been here 17 years, and since the first day I got here, I have wanted to have a driver’s license,’’ he said. He s in the process of legalizing his status, he said, but that may take months.
