A new report from the UK states there is “a realistic possibility” that the new COVID-19 variant has a higher death rate than others.
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that, while the data is not conclusive, “there is some evidence that the new variant may be associated with a higher degree of mortality.”
CDC modeling suggests this new variant, which has been shown to spread especially quickly, could become the predominant variant in the United States by March.
Some of the latest numbers showed 195 cases in the US, with more than 50 of those in Florida, and news out of Minnesota shows a new variant case there from Brazil.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Three days after a White House Coronavirus Task Force meeting where Dr. Deborah Birx spoke about a growing number of coronavirus cases around the country, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it found no evidence to indicate that a United States homegrown variant is to blame.
The CDC made this announcement after an erroneous report surfaced following the White House Coronavirus Task Force members’ weekly report, where Birx wrote:
“This fall/winter surge has been at nearly twice the rate of rise of cases as the spring and summer surges. This acceleration suggests there may be a USA variant that has evolved here in addition to the UK variant that is already spreading in our communities.”

He said scientists researching the mutations need to provide answers about whether or not vaccines are protective against new strains
Dr Deborah Birx warned last week that a new U.S. variant could be up to 50% more transmissible
The CDC says it has no evidence that a mutant strain is responsible and other health experts concur
