On Feb. 7, 2021, Lora Louise Blackwell-Kern peacefully passed away, surrounded by her family.
She was born on June 7, 1930, in Murphysboro.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Reeta (Waller) Grammer; a sister, Berna Dean Galloway; her husband of 59 years, LaRue H. Blackwell; and her husband of five years, Joseph Kern.
She is survived by three children, Gary E. Blackwell, Karen Blackwell Engell and Gayle Blackwell Stearns; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Through her years of teaching music and English as a Second Language at area schools, leading choirs and youth programs in churches and mission work in China and Africa, she impacted the lives of many.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - William Carey University and Hattiesburg Clinic have partnered to open a new student health center on the Hattiesburg campus.
It’s located in the former Baptist Student Union. It’s open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 1-4 p.m.
Services are primarily focused on evaluation and testing for COVID-19 and other cough and fever illnesses.
Students can schedule appointments through Hattiesburg Clinic’s Iris system.

Dr. George Allen “Bub” Haile of Baton Rouge, LA, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 11, 2021 at the age of 86 after a battle with cancer.
Born January 17, 1934, in the small mill town of Ansley, LA, he grew up in nearby Jonesboro as the youngest of eight children. A lifelong learner, his educational journey began with a basketball scholarship to Louisiana Tech and continued on to Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, earning an additional Bachelors and a Master’s in Theology.
He later earned a Master’s in counseling at Louisiana Tech and a Doctorate in Ministry at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.George ministered throughout Louisiana for over 40 years. He served as pastor of several churches until 1962 when he became the Director of the Baptist Student Union at Louisiana Tech where he mentored many students in their Christian faith for eight years. The Howard Payne University Women’s Club will host its annual Yellow Rose Scholarship Luncheon on Thursday, April 15, with area businesses and individuals serving as sponsors. The event will begin at 11:30 a.m. in HPU’s Mabee University Center.
This year, the luncheon will host three guest speakers to serve on a panel. Sarah Ramos ’20, executive assistant to the associate vice president of enrollment management, will be joined by her great aunt Minerva Delgado Lopez ’63 and mother, Anna Delgado Ramos ’90. Each of the women was very involved in various areas of student life.
