Liliana Carrillo’s unraveling over the last year alarmed people in her life.
On Facebook, she spoke of “random invasive feelings of despair and pain.” She said she was “hating being a parent” to her brood of young children and wished she could go back in time.
“I have absolutely no patience or tolerance left,” she added.
More recently, she began to echo the delusion of QAnon believers. She was consumed by the idea that Porterville was the site of a child sex-trafficking ring, according to court records, and contended that the blame for the pandemic rested on her shoulders.

Carolina A. Miranda, who as you’ll see has been immersing herself in architectural solutions for people who are unhoused. This week has been bizzz-eee as California kicked its reopening into a higher gear, so there’s much to share. I’m sitting down to write at an hour when I’m usually in a seismic snore. My 2-year-old is asleep, the coffee is hot, the contact lenses are out and the glasses are on. Let’s do this.

Before the pandemic, Frank Haffner scheduled his routine around a daily trip to his local library in Rosemead.
If he arrived early to beat the crowd, he preferred to nestle into an overstuffed chair in front of the library’s large windows. With the San Gabriel Mountains at his back, he used the natural light to illuminate his reading materials. Sometimes he sat at a table, spread out his stack of books and perused them until one piqued his interest.
Haffner has since had to create his own reading nook at home. He checks out books and DVDs through the library’s online service about once a week. Then he picks them up through its sidewalk service.
