“I am just so eager to go pick up Gus, who’s three, and has had a hard time understanding where his dad’s been for six weeks,” Meili paused with some emotion in his voice.
Opposition increases to proposed peat moss harvesting project south of La Ronge
As opposition continues to mount over a proposed peat moss development south of La Ronge, the area MLA doesn’t think the project can come to fruition.
Lambert Peat Moss said it’s proposed project would see moss harvested from four cluster sites south of La Ronge.
In a nine-page information document posted to the company website, the project would take place in stages and identifies reclamation work.
The project would have an 80-year life span and employ up to 25 people.
The Saskatchewan NDP have introduced five petitions to the Legislative Assembly claiming to have 20,000 names from residents in several northeastern communities.
The private members’ bill was initially put forward by MLA Doyle Vermette, who represents Creighton, Denare Beach and all other communities in northeast Saskatchewan in legislature. The NDP MLA had put forward two other suicide prevention bills in the past, once in 2018 and once in 2019, which were both voted down by Saskatchewan Party MLAs. “I can’t stop thinking of all the families over the last few years who have approached me to share their story of a child, a parent or loved one they’ve lost,” said Vermette in a Saskatchewan NDP news release. “We told them we wouldn’t give up and we would keep pushing this government to do more, to be better, and to do the right thing. It was a long road to get here but really it’s those families that I’m thinking of right now.”
