Bill calls on Dixie State University to change its name © Provided by KUTV Salt Lake City A bill filed during Utah s 2021 legislative session requires Dixie State University to change its name with specific requirements. House Bill 278, sponsored by Rep. Kelly Miles, requires a process for the southern Utah university s board of trustees to consult with the Utah Board of Higher Education to select and recommend a new name for the institution to the state lawmakers. It also requires the Education Interim Committee to prepare and consider legislation incorporating the new name into Utah Code. The bill requires the university s new name not to include the term Dixie and must be recommended to the Utah Legislature by Nov. 1.

As of Friday morning at 6:44 a.m., the account had raised $2,465. Dixie State University is asking the Utah State Legislature to remove DIXIE from the school s name in January 2021, the GoFundMe page created by Ilene Hacker states. As a strong community, Dixie Alumni and Dixie supporters we can stop this action! We love Dixie State and we want it to continue and thrive with the great Dixie name. We want our children and grandchildren to attend Dixie just like we did and have a wonderful experience there. We want to continue to donate, volunteer and serve at DSU as we have always done in the past, the page states.
