Witcher, Sanders win seats on Saltillo s board of aldermen

Incumbent Craig Sanders finished close behind to secure a second term on the board. I felt like I would do well, but I didn t think I would lead the voting, said Witcher, who finished with 291 votes. I tried to reach out to as many people as I could. I am humbled to say the least. Sanders, who ran for office in 2013 and was elected in 2017, collected 280 votes. I am glad to be coming back and I am looking forward to the challenges ahead, Sanders said. We have a lot of problems with aging infrastructure. I am glad I will be able to help tackle those issues.

Four vying for two Saltillo alderman posts

SALTILLO • Saltillo voters will return to the polls Tuesday to finish choosing who they want as their aldermen for the next four years. During the April 6 Republican primary, only three candidates — Brian Morgan, Scottie Clark and Terry Glidewell — secured the mathematical majority needed to win outright. Under state law, the next four finishers must go to a second primary to fill the other two seats. Scott Knight, Craig Sanders, Dylan Whitt and Sonya Hill Witcher will be on the April 27 ballot. Voters will be able to choose up to two candidates. Since there are no Democratic candidates, the top two finishers will secure the final two aldermen seats.

Grantham leads Smith in Saltillo mayoral race

SALTILLO • There could be a lot of new faces at Saltillo City Hall after Tuesday s elections. Challenger Copey Grantham held a 16-vote lead over two-term incumbent Rex Smith Tuesday night in a mayoral race that was too close to call. The race could be settled Wednesday when affidavit ballots are counted. In the race for aldermen, 14 candidates split the vote. Because of that, only three candidates got the mathematical majority needed to win a seat outright. The next four top vote-getters will face off in the April 27 runoff for the final two seats. Grantham, a first-term aldermen, finished the night with 483 votes, compared to Smith s 467 votes. There are still 16 affidavit votes to count, as well as 6 absentee votes outstanding. The absentee ballots must be postmarked by election day and received at city hall within five days to be counted.

Grantham ready to take on Saltillo mayoral role

SALTILLO • Affidavit ballots trimmed Copey Grantham’s thin lead over two-term incumbent Rex Smith Wednesday afternoon, but they did not stop him from effectively winning Saltillo’s mayoral election. With only six absentee ballots outstanding, Grantham’s 13 vote lead makes his victory mathematically certain as it currently stands. Saltillo City Clerk Mary Parker has refused to call the election, however, on the advice of the Secretary of State’s office. “Because of the closeness of the race and the fact there are still outstanding ballots, the Secretary of State’s office said they would not call it,” Parker said. She noted that someone could still contest the election or call for a recount.

Grantham and Smith vie for Saltillo mayor

SALTILLO • Voters will decide who they want to lead the city of Saltillo —  two-term incumbent mayor Rex Smith or first-term alderman Copey Grantham — when they go to the polls next Tuesday.  The voters will also pare down the list of 14 candidates vying to sit on the city s board of aldermen down to just five who will serve until 2025. Since all candidates qualified as Republicans, all of the races will be decided in Tuesday s primary. There will be no run-offs. Both mayoral candidates agree that infrastructure — particularly sewer and water improvements — should be high on the list for Saltillo s administration in the next four years.
