DEPORT — Sometimes, navigating life can mean making tough decisions. And Monday, Deport Mayor John Mark Francis made one. The three-term mayor, only recently reelected, announced his resignation at a special City Council meeting, citing persistent health issues that he said were getting in the way of him doing the job in the way he’d like. “So the way that I would want to be mayor I realized, well, I can’t be active and do the job I want to do,” Francis said Tuesday. Just over six years ago, Francis was in a serious car wreck involving a semi that left him with major damage to his left knee that required surgery, and he had to have an operation on his right arm. Francis said he’s been living with pain for years since and is in need of another surgery. With the full-time responsibility of being mayor, he said he felt he could no longer provide the level of involvement he wanted to bring to his position. With 16-0, ETBU is now 7-0 in the American Southwest Conference and pegs NCAA Division I University of Louisville for the most victories in NCAA women’s basketball this season. ETBU was led by Kenidi White (15 points), Bridget Upton (14 points) and Brooke Webster (12 points), who all had double digits for the Tigers. Grace Stephens led ETBU with five assists while her older sister Mallory converted all eight of her free throws. Mariah Collins and Sydney Martin posted double digits with 12 and 11 points respectively.

Wednesday, January 27, 2021 8:00 am Janice Lea Westmoreland Lipscomb, 77, of Magnolia Springs, Alabama, formerly of Wichita, Kansas, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 16, 2021. Family memorial service held at Vernant Park Baptist Church on Saturday, January 23, 2021. Janice was born in Coffeyville, Kansas, attended East Texas Baptist University, and graduated from Wichita State University in Elementary Education. She taught in Wichita and Robertsdale, Alabama. Janice always had a heart for missions, the persecuted church, and was a devout prayer warrior. She played the organ and piano for church services, taught Vacation Bible School and Sunday School to children and teenagers. Over the years, she sang in the choir, led WMU, GA’s, and children’s choir. A mother of six, she taught them all to love the Lord. Janice is preceded in death by her parents Dr. Rev. N.J. and Wanda Westmoreland, a brother, and a sister. She is survived by her husband Gerald Lipsco

ETBU Is Nation s Best in Bass Fishing; Wins School of the Year

From East Texas Baptist University When it comes to bass fishermen, we grow some good ones around these parts. Proving that this year is Marshall, Texas own East Texas Baptist University, who just laid claim to the coveted title of The Tackle Warehouse School of the Year. We learn from Major League Fishing that the title is presented each year to the college with the highest point total at the conclusion of the regular season. Points are awarded to the top two finishing teams from each school competing in a College Fishing tournament. The ETBU club secured the crown with top finishes in the Southern Conference and a pair of top-10 finishes in the annual Open on Kentucky Lake.
