This legislative session began quietly in January, during the state’s worst peak of cases, hospitalizations and deaths from the coronavirus. With just six weeks left of the 140-day regular session, and the pandemic down to a pre-surge level, the pace is quickening.
Legislators are still working on the big problems that were apparent at the beginning pandemic, voting and election laws, policing and the state budget among them. And they’ve added the disastrous electrical outages during a five-day February freeze that killed more than 200 Texans.

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - The Lubbock Police Department is celebrating National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, honoring its dispatchers.
You may not see them, but theyâre the first voice you hear in an emergency.
In the Comms Center, dispatchers are working around the clock to get life-saving resources where theyâre needed most.
Jessica Ramos and James Quijada have been on the job since 2011.
âI come here because I love what I do. I love helping people and I love being the first responder on the phone. Not the first on scene, the first responder. Iâm glad I get to pick up that phone every day,â Quijada said.
The Belton Police Department is seeking to add experienced officers to their team and is offering a big incentive.
A $5,000 hiring incentive is being offered to certified and experienced officers. If you re interested in applying, you don t have to be certified through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, but you will need to pass the Civil Servant exam.
This event will be held at the Central Texas Council of Governments, 2180 N Main St in Belton, on Saturday, May 14th at 9:00 AM.

The last day to apply is May 10th. Interested candidates can submit their applications via e-mail, fax, or in-person to Human Resources or the Belton Police Department.
