Recurrent, metastatic breast cancer resists treatment and is usually fatal. These tumors often have low numbers of immune cells in them, which renders immune therapies less effective for the disease. This preclinical study suggests that drugs called CDK4 and CDK6 inhibitors may make immune-cell therapies an effective option for treating recurrent ER-positive metastatic breast cancer.
COLUMBUS, Ohio - A class of drugs that inhibits breast cancer progression when used with hormonal therapy might also boost the effectiveness of immune therapy in cases of recurrent, metastatic breast cancer, according to a new study led by researchers at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center - Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC - James).

The status of laser ablation for vulvar lichen sclerosus remained unclear following two small randomized clinical trials that produced conflicting results.
In one study, fractionated carbon dioxide (CO
2) laser treatment led to significantly greater improvement compared with a topical steroid, according to assessment by the Skindex-29 dermatology qualify-of-life index. However, the trial was powered to detect a difference of 16 points on the Skindex-29, and the data showed a difference of 10.9 points.
After adjustment for prior steroid use, the difference in Skindex-29 score remained statistically significant only for patients with prior steroid exposure, reported Linda Burkett, MD, of Magee-Womens Hospital of the University of Pittsburgh Health System, and colleagues in

The end of the emergency phase of the pandemic is in sight in the United States, at least for now. But as the weight of the crisis is lifted, experts are also anticipating a long-term impact on people’s mental health.
For some people, the feelings of anxiety and depression that emerged during the pandemic will resolve as routines resume people go back to the office, social connections are reformed, the seeming danger of activities dissipates. But others will face new or worse mental health issues that persist or even appear down the road, a number that could be quite large given the magnitude of despair and disruption. That burden, however big, stands to put an even greater strain on an already stretched mental health system.

Thirty five years ago the human gene that causes Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) was discovered. It was hailed as a light bulb moment in understanding the disease mechanism. However, there was little practical progress towards new treatments or therapies over the next two decades. Now, the rapid emergence of CRISPR gene editing technique is proving a game changer in the revised battleplan against the distressing condition.

Dystrophin, the rod-shaped protein which connects the cytoskeleton of a muscle fibre to the surrounding cell matrix through the cell membrane, lies at the heart of DMD enigma.
