HOUSTON The Texas State Teachers Association on Tuesday called on Gov. Greg Abbott to allow for mask requirements when students go back to class.

Citing new evidence that the delta variant of the coronavirus could be spread through rare “breakthrough” infections in vaccinated people, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Tuesday recommended increased public mask use in regions where the variant is spreading quickly and at schools.
Texas Teachers Ask Governor Abbott to Allow Masks in Schools
As the COVID-19 pandemic drags on, the Texas State Teachers Association (TSTA) has asked Governor Greg Abbott to leave it up to school districts to decide whether or not to require children to wear masks in school.
KVUE reports that TSTA President Ovidia Molina urged the governor to withdraw his mask mandate prohibition in a statement:
The Texas State Teachers Association calls on Gov. Greg Abbott to withdraw his prohibition on mask mandates and allow individual school districts to require mask use in their facilities if local officials believe masks will help protect the health of their communities as schools reopen for the fall semester…if Gov. Abbott really cares about the health and safety of Texas students, educators and their communities, he will give local school officials and health experts the option of requiring masks in their schools.

KHOU-TV reports that as the Delta variant makes the rounds and COVID-19 cases continue to rise here in Texas, the association wants the governor to allow individual districts to decide for themselves if masks should be required when they reopen.

His reply was: First and most importantly, everyone needs to take seriously the spread of COVID, and there are different ways to do that. The foremost way is to make sure that everyone receives a vaccine, which is the best way to reduce the spread of COVID.
